Etymology:

The generic epithet Tyrannophasma is composed of the first part of the generic name of one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs Tyrannosaurus rex and -phasma, a common ending in Mantophasmatodea. Tyranno refers to the impressive feeding habits of this insect, which is able to kill and consume insects of its own size.
